Hall of Famers Bob Gibson (13-7, 2.98 ERA, a broken leg limited him to 24 starts) and Steve Carlton (14-9, 2.98 ERA) led the Cardinals rotation. Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda was the unanimous NL MVP, with 25 HR, 111 RBI, .923 OPS and fellow Hall of Famer Lou Brock led the league with 52 SB and 113 runs, while hitting .299, .789 OPS. The Cardinals beat the Red Sox in 7 games in the World Series.
The Giants won their 1st of 3 World Series titles in a 5 year period. Buster Posey was the Rookie of the Year, hitting .305 18 HR, .862 OPS. Aubrey Huff hit 26 HR, .891 OPS. Tim Lincecum (16-10, 3.43), Matt Cain (13-11, 3.14) and Jonathan Sanchez (13-9, 3.07) led the rotation. Brian Wilson had 48 saves and a 1.81 ERA. The Giants beat the Rangers in 5 games for their first title since moving to San Francisco.
The ace starter in Game 7 rule has been invoked. An additional day off has been scheduled to allow Bob Gibson to come back and make a third start in Game 7.
Game 1: Bob Gibson pitched a 4-hit shutout to lead the Cardinals to a 4-0 win in the series opener. Lou Brock had 2 hits, including a triple, 2 runs and a steal and Curt Flood had 2 RBI and a run to lead the Cardinals’ offense. Tim Lincecum (4 R in 4.1 IP) took the loss.
