SERIES 19
(43) 1995 BRAVES VS. (86) 2001 DIAMONDBACKS
The Braves won the first World Series title since moving to Atlanta when they beat the Indians in six games. All-time great Greg Maddux (19-2, 1.63) won the Cy Young Award and combined with fellow Hall of Famers Tom Glavine (16-7, 3.08, 3rd in Cy Young voting) and John Smoltz (12-7, 3.18) to give the Braves a very strong rotation. Hall of Famers Fred McGriff (27 HR, 93 RBI, .850 OPS) and Chipper Jones (23 HR, 85 RBI, ,803 OPS) led the offense while David Justice (24 HR, .844 OPS) and Ryan Klesko (23 HR in 329 AB, 1.004 OPS) were key contributors.
The Diamondbacks won the World Series in just their fourth series when they beat the Yankees in seven games. All-time great Randy Johnson (21-6, 2.49, 372 K) won the Cy Young Award while Curt Schilling (22-6, 2.98, 293 K) finished second. Luis Gonzalez hit 47 HR, 142 RBI, while slashing .325/.429/.688. Reggie Sanders hit 33 HR, 90 RBI, .886 OPS.
The ace starter in Game 7 rule has been invoked. An additional day off has been scheduled to allow Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson to come back and make a third start in Game 7.
Game 1: Greg Maddux (1 R in 7 IP, 6 K, 1 BB) outpitched Randy Johnson (4 R in 6 IP, 9 K, 0 BB) in a 4-1 Braves’ win. Chipper Jones homered (2 hits, 3 RBI) while Marquis Grissom had 3 hits (1 2B, 1 R). Matt Williams had 3 hits (1 2B) for the Diamondbacks.
Game 2: Curt Schilling couldn’t get out of the first inning, allowing five runs in .2 IP and giving up hits to 7 of the 9 batters he faced. The Braves put together a 17-hit attack, along with 9 walks, in their 11-1 victory. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit—but they had just 1 XBH (a triple by Chipper Jones). Tom Glavine gave up three runs in six shutout innings for the win. Javier Lopez had 4 hits (2 RBI), David Justice had 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 RBI and Chipper Jones had 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs.
Game 3: The Diamondbacks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st, added another run in the 2nd and then held on to a 5-4 win. John Smoltz couldn’t make it out of the 2nd (5 R in 1.2 IP, 8 hits, 0 K). Reggie Sanders had 3 hits (1 2B) while Matt Williams had a 2 RBI double. Albie Lopez got the win (4 R in 5.2 IP). Javier Lopez (1 HR, 2 RBI) and Jeff Blauser both had 3 hits for the Braves.
Game 4: The Diamondbacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd before the Braves scored 2 runs each in the 4th, 5th and 7th for a 6-2 win and a 3-1 series lead. Steve Avery (2 R in 6 IP) outpitched Brett Anderson (5 R in 6.2 IP). Chipper Jones had 4 hits (1 HR, 3 runs) and Fred McGriff had 3 hits (1 HR, 2 2B, 3 runs).
Game 5: Greg Maddux took a no-hitter and 4-0 lead into the 6th before Steve Finley’s 2-out RBI single broke up the no-hitter and shutout (Tony Womack went to 2nd on a throwing error by SS Jeff Blauser). That was the last run of the series, as the Braves clinched with 4-1 margins in both Game 5 and the series. Maddux gave up just 3 hits and that unearned run in 8 innings. Randy Johnson took the loss (4 R in 6 IP, 5 K, 4 BB).
MVP: Greg Maddux, 2-0, 0.60 ERA (1 ER / 15 IP, 10 K)
