The ace starter in Game 7 rule has been invoked. An additional day off has been scheduled to allow Juan Marichal to come back and make a third start in Game 7.
Game 1: Felipe Alou had 3 hits, including a HR (1 2B, 4 RBI), to lead the Giants to a 9-2 win in Game 1. Harvey Kuenn (3 runs), Orlando Cepeda (1 2B, 1 run) and Tom Haller (1 HR, 1 2B, 2 RBI) all had 2 hits for the Giants. Juan Marichal got a complete game win (2 R on 8 K, 3 K, 2 BB). Nelson Cruz (2 hits) and Vladimir Guerrero both hit solo homers for the Rangers’ only runs. Cliff Lee took the loss (7 R in 3.1 IP, 8 H, 5 K, 0 BB).
Game 2: The Rangers took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th, thanks to 2 homers by Ian Kinsler (3 hits, 3 RBI). Orlando Cepeda’s RBI single and Jim Davenport’s 2 run double cut the deficit to 6-5 and, with the tying run on 2nd, the Rangers called in closer Neftali Feliz, who got Tom Haller to fly out to left and then struck out Ernie Bowman (in the game at short after Angel Pagan was pinch-hit for in the 7th) to get out of the jam. Josh Hamilton’s RBI single in the top of the 9th gave the Rangers an insurance run and a 7-5 lead. Vladimir Guerrero’s single put runners on the corners, but Stu Miller ended the threat by getting Nelson Cruz to ground into a 5-4 fielder’s choice.
Harvey Kuenn led off the bottom of the 9th with a single and Feliz was ejected for arguing after Haller walked on a 3-2 pitch. Matt Harrison came in to pitch and got Felipe Alou to fly out to deep right for the first out. Willie Mays lined a single to left center to load the bases. Orlando Cepeda flied out to left, with the runners holding. Down to their final out, Willie McCovey singled to center to score 2 runs to tie the game and put the winning run on 2nd. Davenport followed with a walk-off single to left center to give the Giants a 8-7 win.
Jim Davenport had 3 hits (1 2B, 3 RBI) and Willie Mays (1 HR, 3 runs), Willie McCovey (2 RBI) and Harvey Kuenn (1 run) all had 2 hits for the Giants. In addition to Kinsler, Josh Hamilton also had 3 hits for the Rangers (1 2B, 1 RBI) while Nelson Cruz homered (2 hits, 2 RBI). Both starters got no decisions: Fred Sanford (6 R in 6 IP, 10 H, 5 K, 0 BB) and C.J. Wilson (2 R in 6 IP, 6 H, 4 K, 1 BB).
Game 3: The Giants took the lead in the 3rd on a RBI single by Willie McCovey followed by a sacrifice fly by Willie Mays. After the Rangers tied the game with 2 in the bottom of the 5th, the Rangers immediately retook the lead on sacrifice flies by Chuck Hiller and Harvey Kuenn in the 6th. Felipe Alou’s RBI single in the 8th gave the Giants an insurance run and, after McCovey walked to load the bases, Mays hit a grand slam to break the game open. The Giants took a 3-0 lead in the series with a 9-2 win. McCovey (1 RBI), Alou (1 2B, 1 RBI), Jose Pagan (1 RBI) and Chuck Hiller (2 BB, 1 run) all had 2 hits for the Giants. Ian Kinsler had 2 hits (1 2B) for the Giants. Billy O’Dell earned a complete game win (2 R on 7 H, 4 K, 0 BB). Colby Lewis got a no decision (2 R in 5 IP on 5 H) before Texas’ bullpen allowed 7 runs in the final 4 innings.
Game 4: The Rangers took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd on a RBI single by Nelson Cruz and a 2 run home run by Bengie Molina and then Cruz’s sacrifice fly in the 4th made it a 4-0 game. Tommy Hunter took that lead, and a no-hitter, into the 5th before Orlando Cepeda led off with a single and eventually scored on a RBI groundout by Jose Pagan. In the 6th, solo homers by Felipe Alou and Willie Mays cut the Giants’ deficit to 4-3. Pagan’s 2 run homer in the top of the 7th gave the Giants the lead before Elvis Andrus’ RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 5. But, then Willie McCovey led off the 8th with a single and Mays’ single put runners on the corners and then Mays stole 2nd. Dustin Nippert should have gotten out of the inning as he got Orlando Cepeda to pop to short, Tom Haller to line out to center and Jim Davenport to ground out to short. But, SS Andrus made a bad throw to score the go-ahead run on Davenport’s grounder and Pagan followed that with a 2 run double. The Giants swept the series with an 8-5 win.
Mays (1 HR), McCovey (1 run), Harvey Kuenn (1 2B), Davenport (2 2B, 2 runs) and Pagan (1 HR, 1 2B, 5 RBI) all had 2 hits for the Giants. Vladimir Guerrero (2 2B, 2 runs) and Julio Borbon had 3 hits and Cruz had 3 hits (2 RBI) for the Rangers. Both starters: Billy Pierce (5 R in 6.1 IP) and Tommy Hunter (5 R in 6.2 IP) got no decisions.
